Strong Communities Begin with Strong Local Leadership

This week I joined fellow mayors, councillors and local government professionals from across the state at the 130th LGAQ Annual Conference in Cairns.

This important gathering focused on ensuring Queensland's councils remain strong, informed and ready for the challenges ahead.

The conference theme, Councils Are Your Every Day, is a timely reminder that local government sits closest to the communities we serve, delivering the roads, parks, water, waste services and community facilities that residents rely on every day.

For local government representatives, attending events such as this is far more than a networking opportunity.

It provides a platform to learn from one another, share ideas, examine emerging challenges and explore practical solutions to ensure we’re equipped to make sound decisions for our own communities.

One of the most important functions of the conference is the consideration of motions put forward by councils from across Queensland.

These motions provide a platform for local governments to identify issues affecting their communities and advocate collectively for improvements that will make Queensland a better place for all Queenslanders.

Through robust debate and collaboration, councils are able to influence policy positions and priorities that help shape the future of our state.

The conference brings together leaders from councils large and small, urban and regional, coastal and remote - because while our communities may differ, many of the challenges we face are shared.

Strong leadership is not about having all the answers - it’s about taking measured steps to stay informed, listening to diverse perspectives and working together to identify solutions that deliver lasting benefits.

As local government leaders, we have a responsibility to consider not only what is best for our own regions, but also how we contribute to a stronger Queensland overall.

When councils are informed, connected and united, our communities are better positioned to thrive.

I’m proud to lead Bundaberg Regional Council and reinforce our commitment moving forward in a cohesive and constructive way, delivering outcomes that matter for Queenslanders today and for generations to come.
